Day 32

Today was a great day. I officially ran/walked 5k! My handy dandy Nike + app even congratulated me when I was done with my walk/run. Are you happy R.S.? I’m one step closer to actually running a full 5k! Go Me! I’m still not running in a marathon though. The exact total in miles was 3.17 for those of you who keep track of the distance using miles. I myself normally do but since R.S. kept harassing me to run a 5k, I felt I’d use that terminology today.

I must be honest about today’s run. I almost quit at the 2.5 miles mark and for no reason other than the devil telling me to. I wasn’t tired and it wasn’t hot or humid this morning so I can’t use that as an excuse. I arrived at the track at 7:30 am and had plenty of time to run/walk as long as I wished. I had no place to be at any particular time so I told the devil he was a lying son of a @&%# and kept it moving.

I ran a portion of all but the second to last lap. I could have run on that lap but I decided not to push until I was really confident running/walking the 5k for a few days straight. The difference between run/walking on the track verses the treadmill is that you can stop immediately if you get tired on the treadmill. When you are walking/running on the track, you still have to finish the lap once you start and at the track I use, you still have to walk back to the parking lot. One can easily push too hard and not make it back to their vehicle. That would not be a good thing. Could you imagine slumping down in the middle of the track unable to move? I can’t. I’ll take things slow for now.

After today’s run/walk I was a little tired. My body ached just a little but I was still comfortable. I think I’m going to stay running/walking the 5k and work on getting my time better. I won’t add any additional distance until I’m really comfortable with my time. Besides, I have things to do. I can’t just be running around a track field all damn day.

Until tomorrow…

Day 31

Good morning great people! Today I was back at the track field and I enjoyed it so much.  There was a nice breeze and it wasn’t too humid and there was absolutely NO RAIN. Those last two days on the treadmill weren’t bad but they were nothing like the track field.

I arrived at the track at 7:30 am and it must have been Senior Citizen Monday because there were more seniors there than Saturday morning at the post office and they were getting it in, you hear me? Daisy was there running like an Olympic track star and there was an older man who I will call Ace Andy there about her age who was running laps when I got there and was still running when I left. Talk about being in shape. I call him Ace Andy because he had ace bandages wrapped all the way from his ankles to his knees on both of his legs. There was also two other older gentlemen out there getting their run on. We young’ens better get our weight up. These seniors are showing us out!

Today, I ran/walked 2.92 miles and I felt great after. I would have gone another lap around the track but I had to be home in time to take my son to school. I can’t wait until his car is out of the shop because I hate having to stop my run/walks before I’m ready. I really wanted to get that extra lap in. I could have easily done it because I wasn’t even tired. I have the eye of the tiger damnit. Oh well, maybe tomorrow.

Well, it’s Monday and I have a busy day ahead.

Until tomorrow…

Day 30

Who’s the WOman?! I have been on my goal to not train for a marathon for one full month, and I have NO plans of stopping (Diddy dances ‘cross the room)! I am so proud of myself. I have been working out off and on in the past but never was I so focused to do it at least five or more days a week. I’m on a serious mission.

Day 30 all started with me waking up at 6:15 and I let the puppies out for a little while. I lied back on a lawn chair while the dogs played and contemplated if I would go to the track or run on the treadmill. I really wanted to go to the track but it looked as though it would rain and I didn’t feel like a “rain” run/walk this morning so I opted for the treadmill, which for me is harder to walk/run on than the track. It may just be harder mentally because I find it so boring. I think it’s about the same physically either way. What say you?

In any event, I came in from playing with the dogs and figured since I was running on the treadmill instead of outside at the track field, I could go back to bed for a little while and get my run/walk done later. It is in fact Sunday and there is no need to rush to get my run/walk in before work so I gladly went back to bed until about 9:30.

I then get up and procrastinate even more by going outside and spending some time with the children and the puppies. Here it was Day 30 and I was acting like I wasn’t going to get my run/walk in. After procrastinating yet another hour I headed downstairs to my gym in the basement to get on the treadmill. Before getting on it, I told myself “You will not go crazy from running in place for two miles. Just do it!” And guess what? I just did it and more. I ran 3.01 miles without going crazy!

After my run, I did some really good stretches and then hit the punching bag for about 5 minutes just because I could. My energy level was still high and the punching bag was just sitting there so I made use of it. I then came back upstairs and almost fainted on the kitchen floor. That last walk up the stairs took a lot out of me. Maybe I should have left the punching bag alone. Ok, I’m exaggerating. I didn’t almost faint, but still.

Now, I feel great again. I can’t wait until tomorrow when I can get back to the track and do the three miles there. I hope you all are reaching your own personal exercise goals. Enjoy your day!

Until tomorrow…

Day 29

And then it rained…Yes, folks I was unable to go to the track today because not only did it rain, it was a freaking monsoon this morning.  There were thunder, lightening, cats, dogs and bad drivers. No umbrella was going to do me any good in that mess so I decided to run on the treadmill. I couldn’t possibly take two days off in a row. That would not be acceptable. I haven’t taken two days off in a row off since I started 29 days ago.

So I got up at 5:30 am and stayed lying in the bed thinking about random things until 6. I then went downstairs and let the dogs out. No, that was NOT a typo. I did say DOGS meaning plural.  Yesterday my dear friends, my beautiful daughter decided to rescue a boxer who had been stuck at the pet store for almost 5 months. She was no longer as cute and cuddly as the 2 month olds so she was having a hard time getting adopted. I don’t know why because she was half the price of the other puppies. For some reason, the older they get, the less expensive they are. Anyway, the little lady below has now joined our family. Her name is Jane.

I know this blog is supposed to be about me running but as I said before eventually Sara (my first dog) would be my running partner. I now have two future running partners because I can’t very well take one running and not the other. I already like Jane even after I told my daughter that I wouldn’t. I kind of knew that Sara would eventually need a friend as she is so energetic and tires us all out before she goes down for a nap so I didn’t mind Jane coming home with us too much.

We brought Jane home to meet Sara who is one full month younger than Jane and at least 10 lbs lighter. Can I tell you that Sarah beat the hell out of Jane when she met her. I had to pull Sara off of Jane several times during their first encounter. I then called the pet store and told them what happened and they said to leave them alone and let them work it out. I told them okay, but if I ended up with one dead dog, they were giving me another one. The gentleman on the phone laughed and told me the girls would be fine.

After a few minutes of Sara and Jane nipping at each other and playing tug of war with some toys, they settled down. They were tired and needed a drink. Sara went to the water dish and Jane followed. Sara allowed Jane to drink from the dish and I knew that they were going to be okay. They are now pretty good friends even though every now and then Sara has to show her dominance by nipping at Jane and correcting her if she tries to jump on me. Sara is NOT trying to have Jane jump on me at all.  She’s a feisty little thing. I’m so blessed to have a big house and a large backyard to keep both dogs. They are quite cool. I enjoyed playing with them both this morning. I worked on training Jane to sit and when she wouldn’t Sara would get annoyed and nip at her. They are a pair. I will say that Sara is definitely a little more intelligent than Jane. Jane is smart but she doesn’t pick up on stuff as quickly as Sara does. Sara is helping to train Jane, which is good. The two of them gave me a workout yesterday so that day off was technically not a day off.

And now back to my run on the treadmill. Isn’t that why you’re here? Ok, so I ran/walked 2.11 miles without losing my sanity down in that basement. I had the music loud and focused on just running. I did not allow my mind to wander about what was going on upstairs in the house or the work on my desk. I just focused on the music and those little dots on the treadmill monitor that indicated how far into my walk/run I was.

The good thing about doing my two mile walk/run in my basement is that afterwards I can really get down on the floor and stretch. I really stretched my muscles and did a few leg lifts to finish off my workout. I came out of that basement a sweaty mess but I felt good. I hope it doesn’t rain tomorrow because I’d like to go to the track if I can. If not I can run/walk on my treadmill. Today I realized today that the basement is not so bad.

Until tomorrow…

Day 28- Day Off

So I decided to take today off. I was a little tired this morning from running around all day yesterday and felt that a day off would do me some good.  Hopefully tomorrow I can break another record on that first mile and not lose steam on the second. In fact, I hope I can make it to the third mile and still be able to breathe. You would think I’m taking a week off, huh?

Anyway, enjoy your day. I am definitely going to enjoy mine.

Until tomorrow…

Day 27

In three more days it will officially be one month of me NOT training for a marathon! I’m so proud of myself. I have not been this focused on exercising every day for a long time. I have definitely found the perfect exercise program for me!

So I get up late (again) and get to the track at almost 8 am. I’m telling you this has got to stop. My hectic life begins at 8:30 am each morning so I really need to get to the track by 7:15 at the latest. That way I will have at least an hour to run/walk if I wish to. I said "wish to" because I am NOT ready to run/walk for an hour. However, I can tell you I am definitely getting to the point where I can run/walk 2 ½ miles with little ease so an hour’s run/walk may not be too far off.  Today, I ran/walked 2.66 miles.  I didn’t break any speed record like I did yesterday but my time for that first mile was pretty much the same. I wanted to beat yesterday’s time but it was humid out and I didn’t have as much energy as I seemed to have yesterday.

It also started raining lightly just as I started finishing up the second mile. I was prepared with my umbrella so everything was good. I think I’m going to get me a little running backpack and leave it by the entrance of the track. It will be equipped with an umbrella, water, some dog treats and whatever else I can think of as time goes on.  This way I will be prepared for anything. You’d think I was going hiking in the jungle instead of running on the track, right?

I will tell you this, as corny as I think they look, it may be time for me to get a sweatband for my head. I’m really tired of sweat running down my face and into my eyes. It seems that as time goes on, I end up getting everything I saw runners on the side of the road have that I would normally laugh at.  I guess if you take your run/walks seriously, being prepared is a major part of it.

Anyway, I’m late and I don’t have much time to write so I wish you all a great day.

Until tomorrow…
